'CLOCKWOKR FLOWERS' album review by Jason Barnard
*A rare review from The Strange Brew*
Ten years late, this long-buried artifact blooms at just the right moment. The self-titled third album by Clockwork Flowers fuses homemade charm with genuine melodic magic. The duo, John and Anthea Bliss, drape their lovingly anachronistic songwriting in vintage Anglophile psychedelia, mellotron whispers, and a poetic mysticism that evokes both Avebury stone circles and Himalayan haze.
Tracks like 'Moonlight in the Sky' and the title cut, co-written with the late Keith Law of Velvett Fogg, channel a fairground swirl of Sgt. Pepper, late Kaleidoscope, and bedroom T-Rex. 'I Was Lord Kitchener’s Valet' and 'Habit the Rabbit' wink at English whimsy without falling into twee. Anthea’s drumming is charmingly raw, John’s vocals are hushed but persuasive, and “Timeless Beauty” is exactly that.
Call it psychedelic nostalgia, call it outsider pop. I call it worth the wait. More at: http://www.theclockworkflowers.com/.../clockwo.../index.html
